In the last one or two years the utility vehicles are gaining popularity in the Indian automobile market. The Ford Motor Company has been the first to introduce a successful compact SUV in India. They have a popular mini SUV introduced in Brazil in 2003. Modifying this to suit the Indian conditions they have launched the SUV EcoSport in 2013 which has earlier been showcased during the Indian auto expo. The EcoSport is consistently in the list of the top twenty bestselling cars of India.
The Ford EcoSport comes in 6 petrol and 5 diesel variants priced Rupees 6.75 to 10.20 lakh. Two of the variants Titanium Ecoboost and Titanium Ecoboost (O) use 1 litre petrol engines. The Titanium 1.5 Ti-VCT AT has an automatic transmission.
The EcoSport comes in colours of kinetic blue, panther black, sea grey, mars red, moon bust silver, chill metallic and diamond white. The body features include body coloured bumpers with sharp fog lights, an octagonal grille with a thick chrome strip, a prominent bonnet line, large head light fittings, a broader air dam and a wind screen of toughened laminated glass. Side profile is smooth with body coloured door handles and rear view mirrors fitted with turn indicators. Bright tail lamp clusters, a rear spoiler, high mounted stop lamps, a pair of reflectors and stylish rails are the other features of the car.
The comfortable cabin of EcoSport has high mounted plush seats, a dash board in silver and black combination, ice blue back light in panels, leather wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio controls, the foldable rear seats, a tilt steering and the power windows. Other basic features include a manual AC, an engine immobiliser, electric ORVMs with blinkers and Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio controls. Top variants have 6 air bags, ABS, EBD, ESP, traction control, an automatic AC, rear parking sensors, electrical body coloured ORVMs with blinkers and touch screen controls for music system.
The two petrol versions use 1000 cc, 118 bhp, 170 NM torque Eco Boost engines giving mileages of 18.9 kmpl. The 1500 cc, 108 bhp, 150 NM torque engines give mileages of 15.8 kmpl. The diesel ones use 1500 cc, 90 bhp, and 214 NM torque engines giving mileages of 22.7 kmpl. The dimensions of the Ford EcoSport are 3999 mm length, 1765 mm width and 1708 mm height with a ground clearance of 200 mm. The tyres are R15 type for base variants and R16 type for top variants.
The Ford EcoSport is stylish, compact and fuel efficient. This SUV is ideal for city commuting also. The competition for the car comes from the likes of the Renault Duster and the Mahindra Quanto.
